“Avatar: The Way Of Water” Makes $1 Billion in 2 Weeks
The recently released Avatar movie, Avatar: The Way Of Waterhas made $1 billion dollars within just 14 days at the global box office which ultimately makes it the fastest film to pass the milestone in 2022. This delayed sequel has been a hit with the entirety of the audience despite the varying reviews.
The original Avatar movie was released in 2009 and was essentially a science fiction version of Pocahontas, where it followed the storyline of greedy and colonialist people who deprived
Pandora, a distant planet, of its resources. The story was narrated through the perspective of Jake Sully who is played by Sam Worthington and is a human soldier. He fell in love with a native warrior named Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldana, and through his love for her he realized the importance of Pandora’s delicately balanced ecosystem.
Avatar: The Way Of Water is based several years later where Jake and Neytiri, dive underwater in order to protect their planet from a human invasion, all while attempting to raise their own family.
The new Avatar movie is the first of the four planned sequels which are supposed to be released in 2024, 2026 and 2028. This is why there is a lot of dependency on the recent sequels box office performance. The director, James Cameron shot the third movie in tandem with The Way Of Water, as well as a little part of the fourth to ensure that all the child actors remained the appropriate age in the movies. Cameron, who has several other directorial credits including The Abyss and The Terminator, stated that his plans in regards to the Avatar films will depend on the current movies profitability.
The new release resumes after the events of the first Avatar movie which was released in 2009, was the highest grossing film of all time and had box office receipts worth $2.97 billion. According to analysts, the new release might not be able to surpass this figure as cinema visits are still limited due to the global pandemic.
However, according to the current performance of the movie, it is likely to overtake Top Gun: Maverick as the biggest film of 2022. This news may be a shock to critics as the new Avatar movie has had various conflicting reviews. It was either viewed as a “lumbering, humorless damp squib of a movie” in which nothing meaningful took place or it was seen as an “eye-popping, jaw-dropping spectacle” and a “fully immersive waking dream”.
According to James Cameron, even though the new Avatar movie has surpassed Jurassic World Dominion and Top Gun: Maverick, it should make at least $2 billion dollars because of its technical innovativeness. Additionally, the movie has also topped the global box office chart, which makes it the United Kingdom’s number one film which has made £25.03 million only in its first two weeks of release.
