NBA preseason recap: Raptors maintain perfect record, defeat Celtics in overtime
THE AP — Boston Toronto utilized an early surge in overtime to defeat Boston 125-119 on Wednesday night. Each had a point total of 13: Pascal Siakam and Precious Achiuwa.
Josh Jackson contributed 13 points to the Raptors’ total. The Raptors advanced to 2-0 in the preseason as Siakam grabbed six boards and Achiuwa grabbed seven. The Celtics were led by Jaylen Brown (2nd). Sam Hauser scored 22 points, making 8 of his 12 shots, including 5 of his 8 attempts from beyond the arc. Boston, currently 1-1 in the preseason, had Jayson Tatum finish with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Payton Pritchard had five assists and 17 points. After Jeff Dowtin of the Raptors (10 points) made a 9-footer, the teams were knotted at 110 with two minutes remaining in regulation. The 18-footer Pritchard hit was Before Montrezl Harrell’s game-winning shot with 26 seconds left lifted Philadelphia over Cleveland, Joel Embiid and James Harden had finished their preseason debuts.
Before sitting down after halftime, Embiid finished with 12 points and 6 rebounds in 18 minutes. Harden played 19 minutes and finished with nine points on 3 of 9 shooting while dishing out five assists.
Tyrese Maxey, who scored 20 points in Monday’s victory over the Nets, carried that momentum into the first half of the preseason, leading Philadelphia with 21 points. He made all three of his three-point attempts, going 9 of 11. Harrell, who committed to Philadelphia for two years during the offseason, scored 13 points
In his first game since being acquired from Utah, Mitchell scored 16 points, while Darius Garland and Raul Neto both had 12. Sharife Cooper and Dean Wade each scored 11 points in the end.
Evan Mobley, a second-year big man for Cleveland, did not participate since he is likely to miss a few weeks of action due to a right ankle sprain sustained this week. In the first half, the Cavaliers had a peek of the promising backcourt pairing of Mitchell and Garland. Mitchell finished the game 6 of 9 overall, including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. He also dished out five assists. Garland, on the other hand, made 4 of 7 shots while dishing out 4 assists.
For Philadelphia, De’Anthony Melton, who was acquired from Memphis in a draft-night deal, had 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists to go along with Shake Milton’s 12 points. Doc Rivers missed the game due to an unspecified ailment. The club was managed by assistant coach Dave Joerger, a former head coach of the Kings and Grizzlies.
