Recall of blood pressure medication: FDA warns that some tablets may cause cancer
The FDA said this week that a pharmaceutical company is recalling a blood pressure drug owing to a possible cancer risk.
Due to nitrosamine levels, Aurobindo Pharma USA is recalling two lots of quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide pills. To treat hypertension and reduce blood pressure, the pills are frequently prescribed.
N-nitroso-quinapril, also known as nitrosamine, is frequently detected in low concentrations in water and food, including cured and grilled meats, dairy products, and vegetables. According to the FDA, high levels of exposure have been associated with a higher risk of developing cancer.
The company’s voluntary recall was disclosed on Wednesday by the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the United States Department of Agriculture.
The drug is described as “pink coloured, scored, round, biconvex, film-coated tablets, debossed with ‘D’ on the scored side and ’19’ on the other side” in the FDA alert.
The FDA stated that no adverse events have been connected to this problem as of now.
An advisory on the FDA website states that before returning their drug, patients “should contact their doctor or health care provider about whether to continue taking their medication, or whether to pursue an alternative treatment.”
