Dating back to 2008 World Sleep Day has been brought into existence by the Global Sleep Society with a motive to bring an awareness among people about the value of proper sleep. Every year the Friday that comes just before the Northern hemisphere’s spring equinox is recognized as the World Sleep Day.

The World Sleep Society that is behind the theme said that through this year’s theme, they aim to focus that sleep is as important as eating and exercising to perpetuate a healthy life.

A survey “How India Sleeps” was conducted by LocalCircles, this received over 39,000 responses from around 309 districts of India. The objective of the survey was to learn the impact of COVID on sleep and if those disruptions are temporary.

It is observed from the survey that 1 in 2 Indians is getting less than 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep, 1 in 4 Indians is getting less than 4 hours of sleep. And 52% of the surveyed Indians say that their sleep patterns changed post COVID.

The survey revealed that sleep related issues like Sleep apnea, waking up during sleep, and insomnia are reported among the surveyed citizens after COVID.

Sleep is an essential part of our lives and has major impact on our physical and mental health.

Keeping this in mind, World Sleep Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of getting quality sleep and its overall benefits. In todays running world and growing expenses, man is chasing money and working extra hours to earn bread for the family.

Sleep helps to maintain a healthy immune system, making it easier for the body not only avoid health issues but also to fight off infections and diseases.

We see the world growing in terms of curing all types of physical illnesses but coming to mental health, its not that big of a progress that we made. But it’s a proven fact that sleep reduces stress, improves mood thus helps improve mental health.

A quality sleep also keeps mind fresh and body active and helps improve concentration and focus. Which leads to easier learning and processing of new information.

Proper sleep helps people be conscious of their surroundings when they are awake, this avoids many accidents and injuries.

Lack of proper sleep which can be considered as “sleep deprivation” can lead to chronic issues like obesity, depression and heart diseases too.

Without sleep our bodies cannot repair or regenerate itself and this can lead to a various number of physical and mental health issues.

Some risks due to improper sleep are: fatigue, impaired concentration, reduced alertness, impaired memory, mood swings, decreased sex drive, irritability, increased risk of mental health issues, weakened immune system, increased risk of diabetes and many more.

Although all these seem to be less chronic, these have greater impacts on one’s personal life, professional life and can also lead to chronic issues in physical and mental health.
