7.1 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE IN KERMADEC – TRIGGERS A TSUNAMI WARNING

New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands hit by 7.1 magnitude earthquake. New Zealand is located in a high-risk seismic zone and is prone to earthquakes.

An earthquake is caused due to the movement of tectonic plates in the earths crust. Earthquakes can be extremely destructive and can cause tremendous loss of life and property. The seismic waves generated by an earthquake can travel through the Earth’s crust, causing vibrations that can be felt over large areas.

Earthquakes can occur anywhere in the world, but are most common in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of intense seismic activity that surrounds the Pacific Ocean. New Zealand’s geographic location is precisely on the boundary of two major tectonic plates – the Pacific plate and Australian plate. Which makes it go prone to earthquakes and being nearly surrounded with water makes it prone to tsunamis.

Days ago on 15 March 2023, the Pacific Ocean was hit by a very strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake that also impacted New Zealand. A month ago 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit the North Wellington and like this New Zealand faces many earthquakes from time to time.

It is reported that New Zealand is hit by around 20,000 earthquakes every year in which 100-200 are very well felt and can create damage.

The earthquake also triggered a tsunami warning by the US Tsunami Warning System. Although the warning was issued and the arrangements were made to tackle the damage that would be made by tsunami – hours after the earthquake there was news saying there wouldn’t be any tsunami allowing the people to breathe.

New Zealand constantly goes under these earthquakes, the country experiences hundreds of earthquakes per year, ranging from minor tremors to larger events. The country’s largest recorded earthquake was a magnitude 8.2 in 1931, which caused significant destruction and loss of life in the Hawke’s Bay region.

New Zealand has implemented a number of measures to reduce the impact of earthquakes on people and property, including building codes and emergency response plans. Despite these measures, earthquakes are still a major risk in New Zealand and can cause significant damage and loss of life.

The earthquake made people look back to the recent quakes in the Turkey and the flash floods that hit Turkey in the previous week. The recent terror of continuous earthquakes raised concerns and people on Twitter are expressing their concern about the areas that are effected.

The discussions of the tremors and the possibilities of human actions to be the cause of these tremors is all over social media. Many users expressed their condolences and while some others blamed mining to be the cause.

Is this actually the Earth warning us to not go any further with the pollution and damage? Or is it just Earth adjusting itself? How many more will we face? Is there any link with the global warming and increase in the sea level? And many other questions arose and are still left unanswered.

Everything apart, the whole world is rooting for the betterment of the effected areas. Countries are standing together and helping the tremor hit areas by sending support, food and donating money.
