Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, a Republican, has decided against running for president in 2024, a source close to Cotton told Media on Sunday. Cotton has been calling supporters and friends to let them know he won’t be running. The news was initially reported by Politico.

One of the rising stars of the Republican party is Cotton, who was first elected to the Senate in 2014. He has advocated for being “tough on crime,” saying, for example, on Media this week that “we need to crack down” after the attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

According to the sources featured Cotton said, “The answer to all of these crimes is to get tough on crime and throw the book at these crooks.” He continued, “We should throw the book” at the perpetrator of the attack on Pelosi.

Cotton is not up for reelection this year since his seat is safe for Republicans. In 2020, he received more than 66% of the vote and was re-elected.

Since then, he has gone across the nation, stopping in crucial early-voting states like Iowa and New Hampshire. According to Open Secrets, he now has cash on hand totaling close to $8 million from donations received by his campaign committee since 2017 that might be transferred to a presidential campaign account.

Presidential candidates must prepare for the presidential election season during the time after Election Day in a midterm year. But this year, the Republican party has to deal with former President Donald Trump, who has been considering declaring his candidacy as early as November 14, according to sources who spoke to the media earlier this weekend.

According to the Sources, Republicans are expected to win control of the House of Representatives by a margin of 228 seats.

Trump, though, is campaigning this weekend in Florida and Pennsylvania and has staked a lot of his hopes on winning the Senate. On Sunday night, he will appear in Miami alongside Republican Senator Marco Rubio, but not Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis is running for re-election on Tuesday and could challenge Trump in 2024. On Sunday, DeSantis held events far from Trump in three Florida communities.
