Dubai Unveils ‘Dubai Reefs’: A Groundbreaking Initiative for the World’s Largest Ocean Restoration Project
Spanning across 600 square kilometres of Dubai’s pristine waters, the ambitious project, ‘Dubai Reefs,’ is set to become a sanctuary for marine life. This initiative will introduce over 400,000 cubic metres of coral reefs, creating a vibrant and sustainable ecosystem to safeguard the aquatic biodiversity in the region.
Dubai has just unveiled an unprecedented initiative: the world’s largest ocean restoration and ecotourism project known as Dubai Reefs.
This groundbreaking endeavour will extend across 600 square kilometres of Dubai’s pristine waters, featuring meticulously designed coral reefs with a total volume surpassing 400,000 cubic metres. Notably, these reefs are anticipated to have the capacity to capture over seven million tonnes of carbon annually, showcasing Dubai’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
The official launch of Dubai Reefs coincides with the 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) at Expo City Dubai, underscoring the global significance of the project. This visionary undertaking is in line with the directives of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and is spearheaded by the Department of Economy and Tourism, in collaboration with the Regulatory Committee on Fishing for Living Aquatic Resources in Dubai.
The collaboration also involves key entities such as Dubai Chambers, the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, and Nakheel. This holistic approach reflects Dubai’s dedication to not only marine conservation but also sustainable economic development.
